5 Procreate brush packs for a traditional look

A recent version of this article with new brushes can be found here.

Procreate has quickly become one of the number one softwares used by illustrators who own an iPad.

And why?

Well, first of all, it is affordable, it is currently 9.99$, you pay once and there is no subscription. And let me tell you it’s SO worth it.

Secondly, it is clean, intuitive, well designed and has a lot of potential.

And last but not least, it already has some really nice brushes that come with the app. The 6B Pencil and the Ink Bleed brushes are some of my favorites.

However, there may be a time when you feel like you need some more of the traditional media look and will want to get some fresh new brushes. Been there, done that.

Here are some of the packs that I’ve purchased while looking for that traditional touch in my work. There’s also a couple free brushes too!

3 Procreate brush sets worth purchasing

MaxPacks

A the moment of writing this, I own three sets by Max Ulichney, The Gouache MaxPack, The Comics MaxPack and The Painter’s MaxPack.

The Gouache MaxPack ($30) consists on 52 natural media brushes, The Comics MaxPack ($15) has 75 and The Painter’s MaxPack ($10) has 12.

My most recent purchase is the Gouache MaxPack.
I think it was one of the most wanted brush packs for Procreate and Max Ulichney did a pretty darn good job. It’s now one of my favorite packs. MaxU Gouache Grainy GlazeMaxU Gouache Wet Soft and the MaxU Gouache Shader are my to go brushes. This set costs $30, but you won’t find any other Gouache only pack out there.

I really like the Painter’s MaxPack even if there are less brushes, from that set I particularly enjoy the smudges, being the MaxU Smudge Pastel one of my favorites.

Vivi Brush

I absolutely adore ViviBrush for Procreate, this pack has a lot of traditional brushes, 44 to be exact. It includes acrylic, watercolor, pastels, oil and pencils.

My favorites from this set are ViviPencil Soft, all the watercolors and the Pan pastel.

This pack is probably the most accurate to traditional media I’ve found. Vivi has a free sampler for you to try and see the look and feel of their brushes.
